On the night that the Lord Jesus was arrested on charges of claiming to be the son of God and Messiah, He founded after eating with His disciples the Passover supper, what He called the “The new covenant” . He said “…This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is being poured out for you.” Luk 22:20. Thus, fulfilling the prophecy of Jeremiah the prophet which said “Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will cut a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah,” Jer 31:31
The old testament was lacking in that it depended on an earthly, weak High Priest that could not sustain or strengthen the weak nor sympathize with them in their shortcomings. It also depended on the blood of animal sacrifices and on the Tabernacle made by human hands. Later, it depended on the Temple of stone that was filled with religious ordinances and rituals.
All this was but for a time and a season, until reformation and renewal came. That was the time when Jesus Christ entered into the presence of God the Father, in the heavenly Holies, by His own blood that He shed on the cross.
Thus, He founded for everyone who believes in Him, an eternal redemption that does not end nor fade away. And so He put away and removed the old covenant by establishing the new covenant.
By this cup, the Lord Jesus Christ gave us the right to the fellowship of His blood. This grants us enjoyment of the blessings of His shed blood. Hence, we can enjoy rest for our conscience because our sins are forgiven, justification despite of our transgressions and purification from our unrighteousness.
Moreover, we also have the confidence to enter at any given time into the presence of God, crying out “ Abba, Father!”, that we may obtain mercy and find help by grace to face difficult circumstances and the challenges that bombard our daily physical and spiritual lives.
Also, He gave us victory over the devil and his host of evil spirits, by stripping them of their authority in front of the celestial and terrestrial world. Thus, we obtained victory by His blood.
Furthermore, each time we take the “Cup of blessing” we declare the death and resurrection of the Lord, and our anticipation of His second coming. Because He is the one who said “Yes, I am coming soon” and so we say to Him “Amen, come Lord Jesus” Rev 22:22.
